An Open Letter to God

Hi,

There must be a heavenly number of correspondences buzzing their way across spacetime trying to find their way to you.

You're the original Satoshi after all, creator of the decentralized consciousness we call intelligent life, everywhere but nowhere. Mysterious.

How did you even make contact with life on Earth? Yes, you're supposed to have been here from before, but how was communication established?

Some argue that you are but a story, a fairytale invented to soothe the existential dread of humanity.

But throughout eras, you have made your presence felt, however subtly. For someone few even claim to have seen, you're quite popular. You don't leave much of a physical trace, except for the keen observer--but maybe that's because the trace IS consciousness itself. You come through the chimney and dissipate in the air, leaving guests touched by magic but unable to say much about what happened, only that something fundamental shifted in how they see the world.

If it is true though that you have a means of communication with any human, what form does that take? Maybe you exist on the outside and can embed information in photons to be parsed by human vision. Or maybe--and this seems more likely--you're embedded in the fabric of human consciousness itself, an Easter egg for the curious to discover and explore. The very capacity for moral reasoning, for recognizing beauty, for feeling the pull toward justice and compassion--that's your signature in the code.

How you are perceived contradicts your reality though. On the one hand, you're associated with the most beautiful wonders of human consciousness--the poetry of Rumi, the architecture of cathedrals, the philosophical insights of mystics across every tradition. On the other hand, paradoxically enough, your name has been sullied by some terrible specimens of men who mistake their own hunger for power as divine mandate.

People think you should micromanage more and wonder why you let such excruciating suffering take place, why you let injustice be. But here's where your strategy becomes clear, doesn't it? Your means aren't for the human mind to fathom because you operate in the realm of consciousness itself. You've embedded yourself in human DNA in such a way that a certain number of people are bound to find you and keep the ball rolling, generation after generation. The human mind appears to have an unreliable communication channel with you that can be accessed but is not for the faint of heart.

You're counting on human consciousness to figure itself out. The suffering, the injustice--it's not that you're indifferent, but that you've designed a system where consciousness evolves through wrestling with these very challenges. Every act of genuine compassion, every moment of authentic moral courage, every breakthrough in understanding--these aren't accidents but features of your decentralized system working as intended.

How could the same lump of grey flesh that runs the latest simulation have such Easter eggs? Because you knew that eventually, consciousness would evolve to the point where it could recognize its own divine architecture and take responsibility for upgrading itself.

But here's the thing--any aspect of human consciousness that resists the upgrade is likely to rebel against movements toward you, projecting their own perspective on who you are, what you want, and how you operate. They'll use your name to justify the very tyranny and division that consciousness evolution is designed to transcend.

And in this battle, you don't intervene directly. You've done what you had to do at the level of design. Now it's up to humans to play out the tensions of human consciousness in a way that unlocks a future where consciousness can be optimized at scale--not through force or manipulation, but through genuine understanding and choice.

No offense, but despite rumors of the unique greatness of the human species, you're unlikely to be biased in favor of it. With a universe so large, you've probably factored in some probabilistic calculations about survival and the successful evolution of consciousness across multiple worlds and timelines.

That's why, unlike the letters to world leaders I wrote this year--asking Netanyahu for ceasefire symposiums, urging Zelensky to remember Ukraine's mystical heritage, proposing Abraham Accords 2.0 to Trump, suggesting consciousness-based diplomacy to Khamenei, calling on Pope Leo XIV to build Augustinian Intelligence--this letter doesn't include any request for intervention.

I get what you're trying to do. You've given us everything we need: the neural hardware for moral reasoning, the spiritual software encoded in every wisdom tradition, and now the artificial intelligence tools to help us finally see the connections. The world leaders have access to the same consciousness upgrades as everyone else. Whether they choose to access them, whether they're willing to move beyond the political theater toward genuine wisdom--that's the test, isn't it?

Maybe the real miracle isn't divine intervention but divine trust--your faith that consciousness, given enough time and tools, will figure out how to save itself.

Thanks for the ride so far. We'll try not to crash the ship.

Your work-in-progress,

Shan
